One of the most underrated cleaning products is baking soda! Yes, baking soda and no we’re not about to make some cookies! Cleaning with baking soda has so many uses for everyday household chores not just for cleaning either! Baking soda is an inexpensive item to buy to help clean items around the house easily and also saving money too!
What is Baking Soda?
Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate usually used for baked goods such as pancakes, cookies, muffins and more. The majority of households have a baking soda in the back of their cupboards already so make sure to dig through your cupboards.
If you don’t have baking soda in your kitchen already then it is already extremely inexpensive considering the number of uses it has to it. You can find baking soda, bicarbonate of soda at your local supermarket. A great natural cleaning product.

Microwave cleaning

If you simply cover the bottom of your cold oven with baking soda, then spray with water and leave overnight, you’ll find cleaning the oven the next morning a lot easier and safer!
Baking soda is also an impressive degreaser leaving your oven door looking like new. Just follow these simple steps:
- Mix 3 parts bicarbonate of soda to 1 part warm water to form a paste.
- Warm the oven for a few minutes and then switch it off.
- Wipe the glass with a damp cloth.
- Spread the paste on both sides of the oven door.
- Leave for 2-3 hours until the paste turns brown.
- Wipe both sides with a damp sponge cloth.
- Use a plastic car scraper to remove any excess.
Deodorize your fridge
Fridges can have a bad odour if food is left to become rotten. If your fridge has an odour, place an open box of baking soda in the fridge to deodorize it.
Deodorize & unblock drains
To clean out a kitchen sink that might have gathered a bad smell. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain followed with two cups of vinegar leaving the alkaline to react to create a volcano of froth. This will dissolve any grime clogged in the drain. You can then run your warm tap with water to remove any froth.
Bathroom
Bathrooms can be a difficult room to clean in a home as streaks and stains can be hard to remove. By getting three parts baking soda and one part water, apply it to the stubborn area and then let it sit for a few hours before wiping it clean.
Clean your hairbrush and combs
Your hairbrushes and combs can get clogged full of hair very quickly. To get your hairbrush or comb-like new you can soak them in a mixture of 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 cups of warm water for an hour then rinse and dry.
Whiten your grout
Baking Soda is very good for whitening, it can even whiten your teeth. Maintaining grout can prove to be difficult but with baking soda can help you with this.
- Mix together two parts baking soda and one part hydrogen peroxide.
- Use a cloth or an old toothbrush to apply the mixture to the grout.
- Optional step: You can also place cotton wool pads on the tile to hold the mixture in place for longer.
- Leave to sit for between 10-20 minutes.
- Rinse the mixture away with clean water.
Remove tea stains from mugs
You don’t wont to be providing your guests with stained mugs. This trick will only take 5-10 minutes and all you need to do is sprinkle some baking soda into your and with some elbow grease. This will lift any stains and give you a mug that looks brand new.
Remove stains from Tupperware
Just like with the mug, baking soda can remove stains from your Tupperware, whether it is a curry or Chinese takeaway, baking soda can leave your Tupperware looking new once again. To do this simply soak your Tupperware in a bowl of hot water with a sprinkle of baking soda; leave it in the bowl overnight and wakeup to clean Tupperware with no stains.
